DIY Hair flowers to perfect your pin up

Hair flowers have always been a great way for me to style my hair and just finish off a look but I've also always been one of those girls that would rather spend my hard earned money on a new piece of clothing to add to my wardrobe than to buy accessories such as earrings, bangles and hair flowers. Since I need a good solutions for this problem and since I don't always find good hair flowers in the right size or with the right colours I decided to make them myself. 

Making your own isn't that hard so it doesn't really require you to be quite the handy woman. It is a great way to be creative and match the pieces to the clothes that you already own or to create some diversity into your up dos. It takes a bit of time and getting used to but once you get the hang of it you'll be done in no time.
All you need for them is:

- Bobby pins, single/double pronged clip or duckbill clips depending on your personal preference and style you wish to go for
- Fake flowers and petals of all sorts
- Felt
- Glue, I prefer to go for a heavy duty glue that is water resistant so there is no risk of that they will fall apart after a few uses or a hot glue gun, which I sadly don't own yet.
- Precision cutter or scissors
- Wire cutter
I just bought a new bouquet of fake flowers so I started of with cutting all the flowers from the wired stems and sorting them in bags so I can store them easily later on in my box, I like to be very organized when it comes to these things, and I left out some petals and a rose. 
To start with choose the size and desired clip. I choose a double pronged clip since I like the stability that they provide for the felt and flowers. 
To make a good base for the flowers to be glued on you'll need the felt. I choose green since this, in my opinion of course, best represents the stem and leaves of an actual flower. You'll need to cut two circles or other geometric shapes out of the felt depending on how big and what shape your piece will be. I went with rectangles that are close the size and shape of the clip itself.

Place one of the felt rectangles between the clip and add glue in the center of the felt also covering the clip. Place the second rectangle on top of the first so the clip is glued in between them. 

This will your base to glue the flowers on. 
Since most fake flowers come with a fake stem, you'll have to remove it. You can't glue this on a clip with much stability unless you use a glue gun. Don't throw away these plastic bits yet since you can also use parts of this for stability and to make sure the flower has the desired shape. If there is no way for you to glue the flower on without it loosing its shape then you can also glue a small piece of felt on the flower and then glue this piece on the clip so it has a firm base for the glue to hold on to.
I actually took apart the entire rose and glued it back together piece by piece. I did this because there were several heavy plastic pieces between the petals that I didn't want to use. I also chose to wait a few hours halfway the process of putting it back together so that the glue had enough time to dry and harden. 

I usually choose the colours and flowers that I want to use up front but make my composition as I go but you could do it differently of course. 
When you're done clip the beautiful piece that you just made on a piece of cardboard so it can stay upright until it is completely dry and ready for use. I usually wait around 12-24 hours to use it. 

Voila, your own unique hair flower made with love!

My hair records

I always laugh really hard when I hear the words "hair records" because it sounds like someone has some sort of file with all the hairstyles you've ever had. I've seen a lot of these posts over the time that I've been reading and following blogs and I really like them. There's no shame in showing how stupid you were when it comes to bad decision making on the hair department.


I started thinking about it again when I sitting at the hairdresser a few weeks ago, Isabelle who colours my hair always brags about what beautiful long hair I have and then I always think back about all the things I've done with it to ruin it over the past years.

When I was little I had the typical bob with the straight bangs. I think almost every woman that is now in her twenties or older had this haircut when they were young. (I was about six years old in this picture)

After that I decided to let my hair grow and by the time I was eleven or twelve years old I had my typical side bangs and long straigh hair and a year later I cut it all to a short coupe again.


I've had the semi-long shoulderlenght hair for a while with a lot of irregular shapes and lenths that was all a part of the metal/emo look I had then and when I was 16 and decided to shave one of the sides of my head. I actually liked this hairstyle but knew I couldn't keep it forever (I actually don't have any photos anymore of the shaved side but a lot of pictures of where it's already growing back like in the picture below).


By the time I was 18 I let that side grow back to a reasonable length and cut my bangs really short and in a U-shape that is typical for the retro style that I love so much but I even outgrew that and just let everything grow longer and longer again until today whilst colouring and bleaching my hair.


I had incredibly long bleached blond hair with a black stripe trough my bangs to still give it that retro feel when I put them into my typical easy retro updos but over time that pompadour wasn't enough any more for me and I started to try out wet sets.

It seemed that my long hair didn't take wet sets well so after some time contemplating I decided to cut my hair into a long middy haircut. It is now perfect length for a wet set.

New Year - New Hair

First of all Happy New Year everyone! Hope you all enjoyed yourself and had a wonderful evening with friends and family.

On Thursday the 29th of December I had an appointment at the hairdresser to get my roots touched up in my black and blond that I've been sporting for more than a year now. And I suddenly decided the day before that, that I was going to cut my hair shorter... I've had my long blond hair for about 3 years now and it's not that i've grown tired of them. I love the length to be honest. But lately I've been having a lot of trouble doing my hair. Victory rolls get really hard to do just because my arms aren't long enough to start rolling them at the end of my hair like you are supposed to do and wet sets takes AGES to dry so I usually end up with saggy curls because I ran out of time. On Christmas Eve I spend a good 2 hours on curling my hair with a curling iron and pin curling everything until it had cooled down, also getting the gorgeous front sweep right but after only three hours the curls just dropped. Like they were suddenly thinking "I don't feel like staying in this shape... BYE". I was quite done with that mess. 

I ended up cutting it into a long middy haircut without layers 'cause they just don't work for me. I've got the classic 'U' shape in the back though. I was kind of surprised by how much hair went off, a good 10 cm or maybe even more but I don't have an ounce of regret in me for doing it. Hair grows back, that one of the beautiful things about it.

Thursday evening I was already playing around with it while removing my make up and ended up making a near perfect victory roll in about two minutes. It just blew my mind away how much easier other vintage styles would be from now on for the next months (my hair grows quite fast).

On friday evening I decided that I wanted to try my wet set again for New Years Eve so I got my sponge rollers out again and they stayed in my hair until it was time for me to get dresses. The result was absolutely to my liking, I still have to practice the rolling and brush out a bit more though. It took me over an hour to roll all my hair in foam rollers and about 45 minutes to brush it out the next day. I looked like a poodle at first.




I really hope I can do this style more often in the future and I'm looking forward to buying a good hot roller set so I don't have to sleep with my rollers all the time. I really don't like the feeling while laying down in bed and I can't say that I feel very sexy either.
